Neon Genesis Evangelion
At the age of 14 Shinji Ikari is summoned by his father to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 after several years of separation. There he unwillingly accepts the task of becoming the pilot of a giant robot by the name EVA01 and protect the world from the enigmatic invaders known as "angels." Even though he repeatedly questions why he has accepted this mission from his estranged and cold father, his doing so helps him to gradually accept himself. However, why exactly are the angels attacking and what are his father’s true intentions are yet to be unraveled.

| Angsty teens led by dysfunctional adults pilot giant armored organic robots to save what's left of the human race from being destroyed by funky-shaped creatures called 'Angels' (though one looks like it could be the spokescreature for Gateway Computers). Lots of philosophizing about the nature of self as perceived by others and what it takes to be accepted, lots of Gnostic imagery, lots of robot battles, lots of head-scratching by confused viewers. It's quite a "love it or hate it" anime, but its impact and influence either way can't be discounted. I liked the first half of the series but the second half was pretty tiresome, with almost everyone pissing and moaning at the drop of a hat about how much their life sucks. The last time I watched this was when I still had the series on VHS, and now that the caps are finally done (from rented DVDs), I can finally lay it completely to rest. | |
| Considered required viewing for anime fans. A story about a boy's struggle with social acceptance buried in a sci-fi flick with religious icons oddly tossed in. Although I found the series entertaining, I never found the urge to watch it more than twice. | |
| One of the most gripping and intense anime series ever made. While EVA can certainly be a frustrating experience at times, it is worth it for the sheer awe-inspiring magnificence it instills when it is at its best. | |
| End of Evangelion (sci-fi): So anyway, the silly little Eva fans (poor bastards) complained about the ending of the TV series, and so Mr. Anno apparently decided to give them the "closure" they deserved: End of Evangelion. If you like Eva, watch it. If you dont know what to think about Eva, think about watching this. If you hate Eva, then you'd best avoid it. Darklord says BORROW, but he's not quite sure why... | |
